WASHINGTON — The White House is criticizing far-right House Republicans for provoking a potential government shutdown this weekend.
“Extreme House Republicans bear the entire responsibility for driving us towards a shutdown,” stated White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Jean-Pierre’s remarks came in response to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who failed to garner sufficient support among GOP caucus members to pass a temporary funding bill that would have signaled progress in avoiding a shutdown early Sunday morning.
“McCarthy needs to address his own caucus,” Pierre stated, dismissing any notion of President Joe Biden negotiating with McCarthy on a funding agreement.
“His conversations should be with them, not the President.”
Shalanda Young, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, commented, “The House Republicans, on one side, are refusing to fulfill their end of the deal.”
“They have reneged on their commitment. They find themselves isolated and solely responsible for their own predicament,” Young added. “Their disorder and disarray now pose a genuine threat of a government shutdown.”
“Extreme House Republicans must cease their political games at the expense of people’s lives, and honor their promise to keep the government operational,” she urged.
