Shopify CEO Criticizes CRA’s Request for Canadian Stores’ Records as an ‘Overreach’

The CEO of Shopify has declared that he will oppose a request from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for six years’ worth of merchant records. Tobi Lutke expressed his concerns on Twitter, stating that the CRA’s request feels like an overreach and that Shopify will fight it. The CRA uses Unnamed Persons Requirements (UPRs) to identify non-compliant taxpayers and ensure the proper reporting of income. The agency must obtain judicial authorization before requesting information from a third-party. This is not the first time the CRA has made such a request, as they previously requested information from PayPal in 2017. Shopify has not yet provided further information on the CRA’s request.
