Sept. 1 (UPI) — A Palestinian man was killed in a violent confrontation on Friday as Israeli Defense Forces conducted a raid in the northern West Bank.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Abd al-Rahim Fayez Ghannem, 36, was fatally shot in the head by troops in the town of Aqaba, near Tubas.

The raid was initiated in search of two fugitives suspected of a shooting incident in early August. Israeli soldiers surrounded a hideout where gunmen were believed to be hiding, resulting in an exchange of gunfire, rocket-launchers, and hand grenades.

The hideout sustained significant damage from bullets and missiles during the confrontation. Following the clearance of smoke, Israeli troops discovered military equipment, handguns, and two homemade bombs within the hideout.

The Israeli Defense Forces shared images of the weapons on Twitter, obtained from the raid. The two fugitives initially managed to escape but were later apprehended in a subsequent operation.

As the Israeli military continues its efforts to dismantle terrorism networks within Palestinian territory, incidents of violence have become increasingly frequent. Since the beginning of the year, Israeli soldiers have conducted over 2,000 raids in the West Bank, successfully averting more than 470 terror attacks, as reported by the Israeli defense ministry.

In recent incidents, an off-duty Israeli soldier was killed and six others were injured in a truck-ramming incident near Modi’in. Additionally, four soldiers were injured when Palestinians detonated explosives in Nablus, while a Palestinian teenager stabbed and wounded an Israeli man at a rail station in Jerusalem on the same day.

Palestinian man wounded in a shooting incident after his car rammed into a police cruiser near Hebron, injuring an officer. In another incident, Israeli Defense Forces shot and killed a Palestinian man who opened fire on soldiers after his vehicle was instructed to stop on a major highway between two hostile settlements in the West Bank.

Retaliatory strikes have resulted in the deaths of 27 Israeli civilians and three IDF soldiers since the beginning of 2023, with numerous Jewish citizens sustaining injuries in ongoing attacks. The United Nations has reported that this year has seen the highest number of Palestinian deaths, exceeding 200, since they began recording fatalities in 2006.
