Los Angeles Angels’ two-way player Shohei Ohtani, a free agent, was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the American League by Major League Baseball. Ohtani’s unanimous MVP win makes history as the first player to achieve this in MLB history. The MLB’s official awards are voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America at the conclusion of the regular season, without taking into consideration the playoffs.
Ohtani, who previously received the honor in 2021, finished second in the MVP voting in 2022, narrowly missing becoming the second player in MLB history to win three consecutive MVP awards. Ohtani’s stellar performance this season included a batting average of .304/.412/.654 with 44 home runs and 95 RBI, along with 23 starts as a pitcher, amassing a 3.14 ERA, and a 3.04 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His overall contributions were estimated by Baseball Reference to be worth 10 Wins Above Replacement, which would have been even more impressive had he not suffered a torn UCL that required surgery, preventing him from pitching during the 2024 season.
This marks the seventh time an Angels player has won the MVP Award, joining the ranks of Mike Trout, Vladimir Guerrero, and Don Baylor. Texas Rangers infielders Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, while missing out on the MVP Award, can find solace in their World Series championship win this fall. Seager, the World Series MVP, had a standout regular season with a batting average of .327/.390/.623 and 33 home runs, while Semien posted a .276/.348/.478 with 29 home runs and 100 RBI.
To add to the uniqueness of the 2023 season, both MVP awards were won unanimously, with Ronald Acuña Jr. taking home the honors in the National League.
