In a remarkable incident captured on video by a bystander, a man fishing in a pond in coastal South Carolina experienced a startling encounter with an alligator.
The footage shows the man reeling in his fishing line and quickly retreating from the water as the medium-sized reptile approaches the shore. Suddenly, the alligator emerges from the water and chases after the man, who manages to escape unharmed.
Micah Kimberlin, who was visiting the Hilton Head area with his family, captured the video on June 20 while cycling together. He began recording when he noticed the alligator approaching the man from the water.
An alligator expert from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources explained that the alligator likely approached the man because it associated humans with food, possibly due to previous feeding by people.
Feeding alligators is illegal in South Carolina. According to an advisory notice issued by the department, feeding these animals can result in them approaching humans and becoming aggressive in their search for food handouts. Fishermen are also advised not to leave scraps or bait in the water.
The notice further states that alligators can be found in nearly any body of water in South Carolina’s coastal plain. They are more active and likely to be seen during the warmer months.
