Shocking Vegas Police Officer Convicted for Daring Casino Heists

In a stunning turn of events, a Las Vegas police officer has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for carrying out a series of daring casino heists. The officer, Caleb Rogers, went to great lengths to steal nearly $165,000 during these daring escapades, even going so far as to brandish a weapon issued by the police department. Rogers, who has been on unpaid suspension and held in a solitary jail cell since his arrest nearly 20 months ago, expressed remorse before his sentencing. Surprisingly, his mother, Crystal Rogers, appeared in court to support her son, despite her disapproval of his actions.

The final robbery in February 2022 was the most dramatic, with Rogers resorting to wielding a gun during his arrest. There was a brief struggle with security officers in a casino parking lot near the Las Vegas Strip, leaving one guard so traumatized that he quit his job and changed careers. US District Judge Andrew Gordon acknowledged that Rogers had a gambling addiction and financial woes, which contributed to his criminal behavior. Taking this into account, Judge Gordon handed down a 12-year sentence, which was less than the maximum of 22 years. In addition, Rogers must serve three years of supervised release after his prison term and repay $85,310 in restitution to the casinos that he robbed.

At the time of the robberies, Rogers was working as a patrol officer. The heists, which occurred between November 2021 and February 2022, targeted casinos located off the Las Vegas Strip. Rogers was found guilty of all three robberies by a jury in July. During the trial, prosecutors painted Rogers as a desperate gambling addict drowning in debt. They revealed that he enlisted the help of his younger brother, Josiah Rogers, to participate in one of the heists at the Red Rock Casino in Summerlin. Josiah was granted immunity and detailed the events of the robbery during his testimony.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced on Tuesday that Rogers’ employment status is pending an internal investigation. Rogers’ legal counsel, Richard Pocker, has stated that they plan to appeal the convictions to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Pocker has criticized the government’s weak evidence linking his client to two of the robberies. (Read more Las Vegas stories.)
