Shocking Incident: Texas Deputy Arrested for Baby’s Tragic Hot Car Death

A Texas sheriff’s deputy loses job and faces felony charges for leaving 2-month-old baby in hot car for 3 hours.

Antonio Almaraz, a 31-year-old deputy from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in San Antonio, was arrested and dismissed after leaving his newborn in a parked car while returning from a pediatrics appointment.

The incident took place in San Antonio where temperatures were expected to reach 94 degrees. The baby was found unresponsive in the car around 1 p.m. and remains in critical condition.

Almaraz, who was on probation, has been charged with reckless injury to a child, abandoning a child with intent to return, and endangering a child. According to the sheriff’s department, he cannot file an appeal or be rehired even if he is cleared of the charges.

Sheriff Javier Salazar expressed his disappointment, stating, “Given the amount of awareness in the community regarding leaving children unattended in vehicles, there is absolutely no valid excuse for this to have occurred.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that even leaving a child in a parked car for 10 minutes can be dangerous, as temperatures inside the vehicle can rise significantly. Children are particularly vulnerable to heat stroke.

To prevent such incidents, officials suggest checking the back seat of a vehicle before locking the doors and leaving. Placing a personal item or a reminder in the backseat can help prevent forgetting a child in the car.
