Sheriff: Woman Accused of Racism and Killing Black Mother Made Threats

A woman from Florida, Susan Louise Lorincz, has been charged with first-degree manslaughter with a firearm, as well as culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault for shooting and killing her Black neighbor, Ajike Owens. The arrest report released by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office indicates that Lorincz had been calling Owens’ children the n-word in the months leading up to the shooting. The report also mentions that Lorincz threw a pair of roller skates at the children before shooting Owens. Lorincz claimed that Owens threatened to kill her, and after she called 911 to report that the kids were threatening and trespassing, she fired a single round from her .380-caliber handgun, which proved fatal for Owens.

The sheriff has said that since January 2021, deputies responded to at least six complaints between Owens and Lorincz, who had an ongoing feud with Owens’ children. The victim’s family, friends, and community leaders, including civil rights attorney Ben Crump, have called for justice for Owens, and they want the state attorney’s office to prosecute Lorincz zealously. The incident has led to questions about Florida’s “stand your ground” law, with detectives stating that Lorincz’s actions are not justifiable under Florida law. Owens’ funeral is set for Monday in Ocala.
