Aug. 22 (UPI) — During a press conference at the National Athletics Centre, Sha’Carri Richardson reflected on her victory, expressing her sense of accomplishment and gratitude. She acknowledged the challenges of competing against legendary athletes, but her preparation and determination enabled her to emerge victorious.
“This win feels truly amazing,” Richardson shared. “It validates all of the hard work and effort I have put into my training, and I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to compete at this level.”
Richardson had previously qualified for the 2021 Summer Games in Tokyo but faced a suspension due to a positive marijuana test. In 2021, she made a comeback at the Prefontaine Classic and finished ninth. However, she did not make the world championship team last year.
This incident sparked a debate about the inclusion of marijuana on the banned substance list and led to criticism of Richardson. She revealed that she used the drug as a coping mechanism for her mother’s death.
Despite the challenges, Richardson remained resilient and shared an empowering message during the press conference, saying, “Never let external influences define who you are. Always believe in yourself and fight for what you want, no matter the obstacles.”
At the competition, Richardson achieved an incredible feat, clocking a time of 10.65 seconds in the 100-meter event, setting a new record. It’s important to note that the current world record of 10.49 seconds set in 1988 by Florence Griffith-Joyner still stands.

In the qualifiers, Richardson showcased her speed with a time of 10.92 seconds, securing her spot in the finals. However, she faced a slight setback in the semifinals, clocking a time of 10.84 seconds.
In the finale, Richardson started in lane number 9 and initially trailed behind the other competitors. However, with unwavering focus and determination, she surged ahead, crossing the finish line just ahead of Shericka Jackson.
Richardson’s expression of astonishment was evident as she grabbed an American flag and celebrated her victory by jogging around the track. With this win, she became the first American to win the women’s 100-meter event at the World Championships since Tori Bowie in 2017.
Despite her success, Richardson remains grounded, stating, “I will stay humble. This is not just a comeback; I am better than before, and I will continue to strive for excellence.”
In the men’s category, Noah Lyles secured victory in the 100-meter event with an impressive time of 9.83 seconds. Meanwhile, Grant Holloway emerged as the winner in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, achieving a season-best time of 12.96 seconds. Additionally, Sweden’s Daniel Stahl triumphed in the men’s discus throw, and Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso claimed victory in the men’s triple jump.
On Day 4 of the competition, spectators can look forward to the finals of the men’s high jump, 3,000-meter steeplechase, and the women’s discus throw and 1,500-meter event.
