Sex Offender Charged with Sexual Assaulting Young Girl in School Bathroom: One Year Anniversary

On August 23, 2022, a disturbing incident unfolded at McAuliffe Elementary School in Riverside. Logan Allen Nighswonger, a convicted sex offender, illegally entered the school campus and sexually assaulted a young girl in a restroom. He now faces charges of forcible lewd acts on a child, unauthorized access to a K-12 campus, and committing sexual assault during a burglary.

Nighswonger, a 32-year-old resident of Riverside, was swiftly arrested on Friday, just a few hours after the alleged assault. He is currently being held without bail at the Robert Presley Jail and is set to appear in court at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback provided details of the incident, stating that around 12:30 p.m., Nighswonger jumped a fence at McAuliffe and entered a building where classes were taking place. It was there that an unidentified campus administrator witnessed Nighswonger exiting a girls’ bathroom, following the sound of a distressed child. The administrator quickly reported the incident.

According to court documents, Nighswonger cornered and groped the 10-year-old victim before fleeing the scene. The extent of the child’s physical injuries remains unclear.

Allan Mucerino, the Superintendent of the Alvord Unified School District, expressed his deep sadness over the incident and emphasized the district’s unwavering commitment to school safety. Mucerino acknowledged that despite best safety practices, threats can still arise, and the district will continue its relentless efforts to mitigate them.

Subsequently, Nighswonger was seen leaving the school building by the administrator, who watched as he jumped another fence while exiting the school grounds. The witness noted the defendant’s car and reported the license plate to the police via a 911 call. This crucial information led the police to quickly locate Nighswonger in Placentia, where he was arrested without resistance on Melrose Street, less than four hours after the incident. He was then transported back to Riverside and booked into jail.

Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez emphasized the priority placed on the safety of students and staff. He assured the public that when the safety is compromised, law enforcement will exhaust all legal means to swiftly apprehend and bring to justice those responsible.

According to court records, Nighswonger has two prior misdemeanor convictions for annoying a minor.
