Settlement Reached: ESPN Anchor Sage Steele Departs Network

CNN

Sage Steele, a prominent anchor on ESPN’s “SportsCenter”, has departed from the network after resolving a lawsuit. Steele had previously made controversial remarks about vaccine mandates, female sports reporters, and former President Barack Obama’s racial identity.

Steele joined ESPN in 2007 but was taken off the network’s air in 2021 due to backlash over her comments on political and social issues. Although she apologized for her remarks, Steele filed a lawsuit against the network, claiming retaliation and violation of her right to free speech.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Steele announced her departure from ESPN/Disney, stating that she wanted to exercise her first amendment rights more freely. She expressed gratitude for her 16 years at the network and expressed excitement for her future endeavors.

CNN has confirmed Steele’s departure through a statement from an ESPN spokesperson.

ESPN and Sage Steele have mutually agreed to part ways. The network acknowledges her many contributions over the years.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Steele and ESPN were engaged in mediation prior to her departure. However, the specific terms of her departure remain unknown as her attorney has not responded to CNN’s request for comment.

In 2021, Steele faced backlash for her controversial comments on a podcast. She expressed concerns about ESPN’s vaccine mandate, stating her belief in individual choice while labeling the mandate as “sick” and “scary.”

Steele also questioned Barack Obama’s identification as Black on the census, citing his upbringing by his White mother and grandmother. She acknowledged his personal choice but expressed her own perspective.

Regarding female sports reporters and sexual harassment, Steele stated that responsibility should be shared among women as well as players, athletes, and coaches. She emphasized the importance of presentation and the impact it can have on professional associations.

Following the controversy, Steele issued an apology, acknowledging the controversy her comments caused and emphasizing the need for constructive and thoughtful communication in these challenging times.
