Settlement Reached by BLM Protesters in Lawsuit Against Former DA Jackie Lacey

Former Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey’s late husband, in a shocking incident, held three Black Lives Matter demonstrators at gunpoint. However, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Lacey have reached a settlement in their part of the case, leaving the remaining charges against the estate of David Lacey for assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The trial is scheduled for August 1, and the terms of Jackie Lacey’s settlement offer remain undisclosed.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit include Melina Abdullah, a professor and former chair of the Department of Pan-African Studies at Cal State Los Angeles and a co-founder of the Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter, along with Dahlia Ferlito and Justin Marks. Abdullah and other activists have criticized Lacey for not prosecuting law enforcement officers involved in fatal on-duty shootings during her tenure as the District Attorney.

Protests, often led by Black Lives Matter activists, have been taking place outside the Hall of Justice, where Lacey’s office was situated, every Wednesday for years. Protesters gathered in large numbers, brandishing signs, using noise amplifiers, and playing drums while chanting slogans like “Bye, Jackie” and “Jackie Lacey Must Go.”

The confrontation between the plaintiffs and the Laceys occurred when the group showed up at the couple’s residence in Granada Hills. They wanted to address their concerns with Jackie Lacey, who had allegedly turned down their request for a meeting. David Lacey, upon answering the door, pointed a gun at the visitors, threatening to shoot if they did not leave his porch. Tragically, David Lacey passed away on September 5.

The incident at the Lacey home took place the day before Jackie Lacey, the first woman and first Black prosecutor to hold the position since the office’s establishment in 1850, was forced into a runoff with George Gascón, the former San Francisco County District Attorney who eventually won the election.
