August 21 (UPI) — Sergino Dest, a defender for the United States Men’s National Team, has joined PSV Eindhoven on a season-long loan from Barcelona, as announced on Monday by the soccer clubs.
“PSV remained in constant communication with me, expressing their keen desire to bring me on board. It was a good feeling,” stated Dest in a news release. “Moreover, I admire the style of football played at PSV. I believe it suits my abilities very well.”
Dest, aged 22, has been selected for PSV’s 22-man senior team, which will be facing Rangers F.C. on Tuesday for a Championship League play-off round game. His contract includes an option to transfer permanently to PSV.
During his youth career, Dest played for Dutch Eredivisie clubs Ajax and Almere City. He made his debut in senior professional football at Ajax in 2019 and transferred to Barcelona in 2020. In September of the same year, the Spanish Ligue 1 club, Barcelona, loaned Dest to AC Milan.
Dest, while at AC Milan, made a total of eight appearances, including two starts, for the Italian Serie A club. Within two seasons at Barcelona, he participated in 72 games, being a starter in 56 of them. He also represented the U.S. men’s team in 26 international matches, including the 2022 World Cup.
“Although I am still the same player, I have gained valuable experience and, hopefully, improved my efficiency,” Dest expressed. “I am eager to make my debut.”
PSV will play against Rangers on Tuesday at 3 p.m. EDT in Glasgow, Scotland.
