Serco Secures £350m DWP Contract for Disability Benefits Health Assessments
Outsourcing giant Serco has been awarded a five-year contract worth £350 million by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to assist with the assessment of disability benefit claimants. The contract, set to commence in September 2024, will involve delivering functional assessment services (FAS) in the south-west of England, pending workload volumes.
Serco stated that it will be responsible for conducting functional health assessments on behalf of the DWP to determine disability benefits and support. Drawing on its existing work with the National Disability Enquiry Service in Australia and eligibility determinations for individuals under the US Affordable Care Act, the company aims to ensure that all claimants are treated with care and respect, and that its employees are well-trained to provide high-quality and consistent health assessments.
Following a significant increase in UK and European immigration and justice sales, which reached around £621 million, Serco’s underlying operating profit rose by 9% year-on-year to £148 million in the first half of the year. The company also provides accommodation for asylum seekers and operates immigrant detention and removal centers in partnership with the Home Office.
Shares in Serco have experienced a 0.21% increase to 145.40p in morning trading on Tuesday.
