General Motors is delaying production of its electric pickup trucks at its Orion, Michigan factory for a year due to “evolving EV demand,” as reported by Reuters. This decision suggests that the anticipated EV demand may not be as strong as initially projected by automakers.
Originally, GM had planned to begin production of its Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV in late 2024 at the Orion Assembly plant. However, these plans have now been delayed until late 2025. The decision is attributed to the need to “better manage capital investment while aligning with evolving EV demand,” according to a GM spokesperson interviewed by Reuters. It seems that there is currently insufficient interest in these two electric vehicles.
Approximately 1,000 employees from the Orion Assembly plant will have the opportunity to transfer to other assembly plants in Michigan, including GM’s Detroit Factory Zero, which already produces the Silverado EV, Hummer pickup, and SUV. In the coming year, Factory Zero will also begin production of the Sierra EV.
