‘Sense of Revenge’: Father’s Journey to Outsmart Robocallers and Scammers after an Incident with His Son

In an effort to combat telemarketers and scammers, Roger Anderson created an innovative artificial intelligence call-deflection system. Motivated by an incident where a telemarketer swore at his son, Anderson wanted to disrupt unwanted spam calls by engaging fraudsters with a ChatGPT-powered personality, diverting their attention and preventing them from extracting personal and financial information from unsuspecting individuals.

“Although it may seem ridiculous, I believe that this is the only way to address the issue of unsolicited telemarketing, as traditional methods have failed to stop these incessant calls,” explained Anderson, the founder of the Jolly Roger Telephone Company.

Anderson explained, “Thanks to ChatGPT, these robots can adapt their conversation to match the context of the call. For example, if a scammer brings up debt consolidation, the robots will share their own debt stories and playfully engage with the scammer. Similarly, if the scammer discusses Medicare fraud, the robots will discuss Medicare to hold their attention.”

According to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), unwanted robocalls have become a major issue, with Americans receiving approximately 4 billion of these calls each month. Research from caller-ID company Truecaller revealed that phone scams caused Americans to lose nearly $40 billion between May 2021 and May 2022. Anderson highlighted the challenge of tackling the problem, stating, “We are all suffering from the abuse of telemarketing and scammers. Similar to how the post office cannot prevent spam letters from being delivered, the telecommunications industry faces a similar dilemma.”

According to the YouMail Robocall Index, there have already been over 28 billion robocalls nationwide this year, with a quarter of them being scams. Anderson revealed that a single phone scam operator utilizing auto-dial and voice technology can make hundreds of calls per minute in search of potential victims. Anderson’s AI-generated personalities, such as Whitey Whitebeard (an old man with memory loss), Salty Sally (a distracted mother), and Whiskey Jack (a man engrossed in a sports game), were designed to entice scammers and disrupt their operations.

Anderson elaborated, “Utilizing ChatGPT, we can keep these telemarketers engaged in conversation for as long as possible. We intercept their calls, occupy their time, and prevent them from calling others down the line.”
