Washington — A group of senators, representing both political parties, has penned a letter to Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, expressing deep concern and anger over his detention in Russia.
The 32 senators conveyed their support and solidarity to Gershkovich, urging for his and fellow detainee Paul Whelan’s immediate and unconditional release. They denounced the Russian government’s use of Gershkovich as a political pawn.
Gershkovich was arrested in March on spying charges, making him the first U.S. journalist in decades to face such allegations in Russia. The U.S. and the Wall Street Journal vehemently denied the accusations and have demanded his release.
Last month, a Russian court ordered an extension of Gershkovich’s detention for an additional three months.
The senators emphasized the importance of a free press in upholding human rights worldwide. They commended Gershkovich for his reporting on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has resulted in countless atrocities and loss of life.
Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware and Republican Senator James Risch of Idaho spearheaded the letter, stating that every day Gershkovich spends in a Russian prison is an injustice.
The senators affirmed their ongoing efforts to secure Gershkovich’s freedom and assured him of widespread public support beyond the United States Senate. The House of Representatives also passed a resolution demanding his release, reinforcing the Biden administration’s commitment to the cause.
Republican Representative Michael McCaul of Texas stressed the importance of a free press for democracy and accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of arresting Gershkovich to silence him and intimidate other journalists.
McCaul emphasized that using American citizens as political pawns will not be tolerated.
The U.S. is also seeking the release of Paul Whelan, who is currently serving a 16-year sentence on espionage charges, which the U.S. denies. Both men are considered to be wrongfully detained, and the U.S. government is fully dedicated to securing their freedom.
