Senators Call Upon Opill Birth Control Maker to Establish Affordable Retail Price

A group of Democratic senators is urging Perrigo, the manufacturer of the first over-the-counter birth control pill in the U.S., to make the product affordable and ensure broad distribution. The pill, called Opill and produced by Perrigo in Dublin, was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for sale without a prescription. The senators commend Perrigo for making safe and effective oral contraception available to people of all ages without a prescription. However, they emphasize the importance of affordability for equitable access to birth control and urge Perrigo to release an affordable retail price and distribute the product widely. They refer to a survey conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, which found that almost 85% of women are unwilling or unable to pay more than $20 a month for over-the-counter birth control. While the Affordable Care Act requires insurers to cover prescription birth control, over-the-counter products are not typically covered. The senators highlight that when contraception is not affordable, uninsured individuals may choose not to use it at all. Therefore, they emphasize the need for Opill to be affordable for individuals without health insurance and fully covered for those with insurance.
