Senator Manchin’s Vision for Revitalizing the Senate Dress Code: A Bold Step in Restoring Tradition

In a surprising move, Senator Joe Manchin is working on a proposal that has garnered bipartisan support. According to a spokesperson for Manchin, as reported by Forbes, the senator is planning to introduce a resolution to reinstate the Senate dress code that was abolished just a few days ago. The decision to stop enforcing the unofficial requirement for business attire was made by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in an attempt to accommodate Senator John Fetterman, who prefers more casual attire such as hoodies and shorts and had been voting from a doorway.

The restoration of the dress code has garnered support from 46 Republicans, who have already signed a letter expressing their agreement. If all 49 Republicans, including Manchin, vote in favor of the resolution, it will only require one more Democratic vote to pass. However, Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin has already voiced his criticism of the change, as noted by Forbes. Durbin stated that while he considers Senator Fetterman to be a personal friend, he believes that the Senate should have certain standards when it comes to attire on the Senate floor. The Hill also reported Durbin’s remarks.

Republican Senator John Cornyn referred to senators who support the restoration of the dress code as “the coalition of the rational,” according to the Hill. Cornyn expressed his belief that it is absurd for the dress code to conform to the lowest common denominator. In response, Fetterman stated that he would wear a suit if the House of Representatives stops their efforts to shut the government down and provides full support to Ukraine.
