Schumer’s remarks were followed by plans to address antisemitism in a Senate speech, coinciding with upcoming legislative considerations for aid to Israel and Ukraine.
The Anti-Defamation League reported a 400% increase in antisemitic incidents in the U.S. after October 7, including boycotts and vandalism against Jewish-owned businesses and harassment of Jewish students on college campuses.
The senator highlighted specific instances, such as a Jewish high school teacher in New York City who faced demands for her dismissal after attending a pro-Israel rally and a rise in attacks against Jewish individuals simply for their religious identity.
Schumer also drew attention to the tragic toll of the Israel-Hamas conflict, emphasizing the need to prevent criticism of Israel from morphing into a denial of its right to exist.
Amid mounting concerns, Schumer also acknowledged the fears of Arab Americans amidst a rise in Islamophobia and expressed the need for greater understanding and empathy as the crisis continues to divide Congress.
The Israel-Hamas crisis has prompted only about three dozen Democratic members to support calls for a full ceasefire, highlighting the complex and divisive nature of the issue on Capitol Hill.
