Second Railway Company Concedes to Union’s Sick Time Agreement

Union Pacific railroad has reached a tentative agreement with the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers regarding paid sick leave. This agreement, reached over the weekend, will provide up to eight paid sick leave days to approximately 5,900 railroad employees. While all Union Pacific employees already receive some form of paid leave, this proposed agreement would grant union members an additional five paid sick days annually, prorated for 2023. Starting next year, they will also have the option to convert up to three paid leave days for use as paid sick time.

If this agreement is ratified by the workers, Union Pacific, based in Omaha, Nebraska, will have paid sick leave agreements in place with all 13 of its labor unions. This makes Union Pacific the second railroad in the industry to establish such agreements, following the lead of Norfolk Southern last month. Other railroads, including CSX, BNSF, Canadian National, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City, are still in negotiations with their unions regarding paid sick time.
