“The Equalizer 3” dominated the box office with an impressive $42.2 million opening over the four-day holiday weekend, making it the top-grossing film in North America, according to the latest industry estimates unveiled on Monday.
This latest installment in the action franchise, featuring Denzel Washington and directed by Antoine Fuqua, recorded the second-highest Labor Day weekend opening in history. The only movie that surpassed it was “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which made a whopping $94.6 million in its four-day weekend debut in 2021.
“Barbie” claimed the second spot with a solid $13.1 million in its seventh week of release, as reported by Comscore.
“Blue Beetle” secured the third position with a respectable $9.2 million in its third week.
After topping the charts in its opening week, “Gran Turismo” settled for fourth place, earning $8.5 million.
“Oppenheimer” held the fifth spot, amassing a total of $7.5 million in its seventh week of release.
The remaining spots in the top 10 domestic releases were filled by “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” ($6 million), “Bottoms” ($3.659 million), “Meg 2: The Trench” ($3.65 million), “Strays” ($3.2 million), and “Talk to Me” ($2.2 million).
The total box office earnings for the four-day weekend reached an estimated $113.6 million. Furthermore, the year-to-date total stands at an impressive $6.776 billion, exhibiting a remarkable 25.5% increase compared to the previous year, according to Comscore.
