Season 40 changes criticized by ‘Jeopardy!’ champion James Holzhauer

The gambler, known as James Holzhauer, expressed his discontent with the decisions made by “Jeopardy!” showrunner Michael Davies regarding the upcoming Season 40. Davies recently revealed in a podcast that the show will rely on recycled material and former contestants for the new season. Holzhauer took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share his thoughts on the matter and provided a concise summary of the announcement. He acknowledged the value of the show’s writers but also highlighted the plan to produce the season without them.

Representatives for Holzhauer and “Jeopardy!” were contacted for comment but have not responded yet. Holzhauer, a professional sports gambler, made a name for himself by winning 32 consecutive games in 2019 and emerging victorious in the “Jeopardy! Masters” tournament this year. His winnings in regular season play are only surpassed by the show’s host, Ken Jennings. Additionally, he holds records for single-game winnings.

Davies, during the podcast, expressed his admiration for the show’s writers and acknowledged their importance in creating original material for the best episodes. However, he also mentioned the challenges they face, such as seeking higher wages, regulation for artificial intelligence, and improved pay from streaming services. Holzhauer reemphasized the importance of the writers in a tweet while also providing a summary of the upcoming season’s production plan.

The show, hosted by Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik, will feature contestants from Season 37 participating in a “second chance tournament.” The material for the season will consist of a combination of pre-strike material written by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers and material from previous seasons. Additionally, there will be an increase in prize money for the upcoming season. However, Davies could not provide a specific air date for the show’s “regular” programming.

Rumors of the show proceeding with its annual “Tournament of Champions” during the strike prompted several contenders to declare their support for the strike and refuse to participate. However, a representative from “Jeopardy!” clarified that there were no plans to produce a Tournament of Champions for Season 39 until the strike is resolved. Season 40 of “Jeopardy!” is scheduled to premiere next month.
