Searching for songs on YouTube may soon be possible by simply humming

Google recently announced a new feature that will make searching for songs on YouTube a breeze for Android users. Instead of typing in the song title or artist, users will be able to simply hum or sing a few seconds of the song, and YouTube will do the rest. This experimental feature allows beta users to toggle the option in YouTube’s voice search and hum or record the song they’re looking for for three seconds or more. Once the software identifies the song, users will be provided with relevant official music content, user-generated videos, and Shorts featuring the searched song directly in the YouTube app.

Currently, only a small number of Android users have access to this feature, but Google plans to release it to everyone soon. If successful, this new update will put YouTube in direct competition with Apple’s Shazam app. Google’s objective with this feature is twofold: to make it easier for users to find and engage with content on YouTube and to alleviate the pressure on creators to upload multiple times a day.

This is not the first time Google has integrated sound-to-search technology into its platforms. Last year, they launched a similar feature on the Google app, Google Search widget, and Google Assistant. The main difference is that users were required to hum the tune for a longer duration, 10 to 15 seconds. Using machine learning models, the audio is transformed into a number-based sequence representing the song’s melody. These sequences are then compared to thousands of songs from around the world in real-time to find potential matches.

Overall, this new feature from Google is a game-changer for music lovers who want a more seamless and intuitive way to find their favorite songs on YouTube.
