Scottish Private Island Listed for the First Time in 85 Years

Torsa Island, part of the picturesque Slate Islands archipelago off the west coast of Scotland, is now on the market for $1.9 million. This marks the first time in 85 years that the island has been listed for sale. Spanning 270 acres, Torsa Island is steeped in history, with one notable feature being the ruined Casteal nan Con (the Dogs’ Castle). This tower house, located on a rocky platform, was once held by Clan Maclean, one of the oldest Scottish clans in the Highlands. They owned vast amounts of land in Argyll.

The name “Torsa” originates from Norse and roughly translates to “Thor’s Island,” reflecting the island’s rich Clan history. The island is home to a three-bedroom period farmhouse, boasting breathtaking views of the sea and a diverse range of wildlife including sea eagles, blue hares, roe deer, and otters. The land is currently utilized for farming cattle and sheep.

The listing highlights the presence of various wild bird species, such as snipe, woodcock, duck, and geese, making the island a compelling destination for sports enthusiasts. According to the listing, “Torsa is something of a rarity as a Scottish island, offering the opportunity to own an idyllic island with complete tranquillity and privacy that is also readily accessible to the Scottish mainland.”

In addition to the farmhouse, there are traditional stone farm buildings adjacent to it. These buildings have the potential for redevelopment into additional residential accommodations, as stated in the listing. The Torsa Farmhouse is currently managed as a successful holiday business.

Torsa Island also offers a sheltered anchorage for motorboats and yachts in Ardinamir Bay, located to the south of the island. The island is easily accessible by sea from Ellenabeich on the Isle of Seil, as it is connected to the mainland by a historic bridge.

Luke French, representing Savills, stated, “This idyllic Scottish island surrounded by stunning West Coast scenery and sheltered sailing waters could be a dream haven for a buyer seeking peace and solitude. However, there is also the option of taking on an established holiday let business if desired.”
