Scientists warn that today, a Cannibal coronal mass ejection from the sun is expected to collide with Earth, potentially leading to geomagnetic storms and power outages.

Earth is frequently bombarded by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun. However, scientists are less familiar with a phenomenon called a ‘cannibal’ ejection, which refers to the collision of multiple solar storms and a dark eruption. It is this cannibal CME that is currently heading toward our planet. While it is not expected to have a significant impact on our electronic systems, satellites, or power grids, scientists have warned of the possibility of minor outages and blackouts. Sean Elvidge, an associate professor of space environment at the University of Birmingham, explains that these storms can cause disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field, leading to various space weather effects.
