Scientists Reveal the Key to Securing a Second Date: Good Manners for Men, Flirting for Women

The Secrets to Securing a Second Date: Scientists Unveil Dating Strategies for Men and Women

In the pursuit of a successful second date, traditional tactics such as cheesy chat-up lines and flowers have long been relied upon. However, a recent study led by the University of Florida has shed light on the most effective strategies for securing that coveted second outing. The findings indicate that the secrets to a second date vary significantly between men and women.

According to the study, women are more likely to gravitate towards men who engage in flirty eye contact, dole out compliments, and engage in hand-holding. Politeness and a proclivity for asking questions are key attributes that men should exhibit to increase their chances of securing a second date.

Lead researcher James Moran, from the University of Florida, became interested in this topic after observing a particularly disastrous date at a bar. The man’s strange and aggressive behavior led the woman to promptly leave, leaving him bewildered. As a masters student studying relationship science at the time, Moran wondered if there was existing research on successful first date behaviors.

To investigate this further, the study recruited 131 participants to explore the green flags in the heterosexual dating scene. Both men and women were asked to rank attributes they believed were important on a date, falling into the categories of ‘etiquette,’ ‘involvement,’ and ‘behavior.’ Politeness, attentiveness, and engaging conversation were categorized as ‘etiquette,’ while ‘involvement’ consisted of actions such as drinking alcohol and holding hands. ‘Behavior’ included two attributes – paying for the date and holding the door open.

Results showed that women perceived dates with the highest level of etiquette to be more successful in the dating world. They tended to avoid individuals who became intoxicated or showed signs of being disinterested by constantly checking their phones. In contrast, men valued women who exhibited more ‘involvement,’ such as holding hands and engaging in flirtatious behavior. While women prioritized flirty eye contact and alcohol consumption, men found that being polite and asking questions increased their chances of securing a second date.

Interestingly, the study also examined the perceptions and strategies that individuals had of themselves. It was revealed that women prioritized wearing makeup and being funny, while men were more likely to engage in playful behavior, such as picking up a woman in their car, if they were interested in a second date. However, the researchers cautioned that it may not accurately represent real-life dating scenarios, as the study was partly informed by watching the edited reality show ‘Dating Around’ on Netflix.

While the findings offer valuable insights, the researchers acknowledge that dating strategies may not have a significant impact on real-world outcomes. Nevertheless, they believe that this research can provide some guidance for individuals navigating the dating world, as dating can often evoke stress in the pursuit of finding a long-term romantic partner. As Ryan Reynolds aptly stated, “A first date is an interview.”
