Union Bosses Express Their Discontent
The general secretary of the RMT, Mick Lynch, has announced that the upcoming strike action will effectively “shut down the tube” and demonstrate the vital role played by these workers. According to him, the proposed cuts to 600 jobs and pensions by Transport for London (TfL) are completely unacceptable. Lynch urges London Mayor Sadiq Khan to align with the union and support London Underground staff in opposing the Tory Government’s harmful agenda towards key London transport infrastructure.
Finn Brennan, the full-time organizer for Aslef on London Underground, has declared that the union is joining the RMT in their planned strike action. This is due to concerns that certain changes would make it extremely difficult for drivers to manage their personal lives outside of work. Brennan explains that strike action is a last resort, but recent actions by London Underground management have shown a determination to push through detrimental changes against union opposition whenever they can. The proposed changes include a new attendance procedure that neglects representation and appeal rights, an extended length of warnings for disciplinary measures, and limitations on drivers’ ability to organize their personal lives. The management also seeks to implement “trains modernization” plans that would further disrupt the work-life balance of Tube train drivers.
Transport for London’s Response
In response to the strike announcement, Transport for London has clarified that there are currently no plans to modify pension arrangements. However, they are considering various proposals to ensure job security and avoid additional work hours for employees. Additionally, TfL and the unions have reached an agreement that no pension changes will be made prior to the next general election. Glynn Barton, the chief operating officer at TfL, is optimistic about finding resolutions through dialogue with the trade unions.
Furthermore, the RMT has revealed plans for strikes involving 20,000 rail workers across the UK in July.
