Scarlett Johansson Fights Back: Sues AI App for Unauthorized Use of Her Likeness in Ad Campaign

has filed a lawsuit against an AI app that unlawfully used her name and image in an online advertisement.

Johansson recently discovered a 22-second ad on X/Twitter, created by an artificial intelligence image-generating app called Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar, featuring her unauthorized appearance. Representatives for the actor have confirmed that Johansson has no affiliation with the app. Her attorney, Kevin Yorn, has addressed the situation legally. Although the ad was initially seen on Oct. 28, it seems to have been removed from the internet since then.

“We take these matters seriously and will pursue all available legal actions,” said Yorn in a statement to Variety.

Variety reviewed the ad, which starts with an old clip of Johansson from Marvel’s “Black Widow.” The video shows Johansson saying, “What’s up guys? It’s Scarlett and I want you to come with me…” before her mouth is covered by a graphic and the screen transitions to AI-generated photos resembling the actress. A synthetic voice imitating Johansson proceeds to promote the AI app, stating, “It’s not just avatars. You can also create image-text combinations and even AI videos. Don’t miss out,” in a voice resembling Johansson’s.

The advertisement includes fine print stating, “Images produced by Lisa AI. It has nothing to do with this person.” Convert Software, the creators of Lisa AI apps, have multiple apps available on the App Store and Google Play. However, they have not responded to Variety‘s request for comment.

Many states, including California, have strict laws regarding privacy rights. These laws provide legal remedies for the unauthorized use of a person’s “name, voice, signature, photograph or likeness” in advertising or promotions. While some celebrities may sue to set a precedent, most cases are resolved with cease and desist orders.

Johansson is not the only actor whose name and likeness have been exploited for advertising purposes. Last month, Tom Hanks took to social media to warn his fans about a promotional video for a dental plan featuring an AI version of himself. Hanks posted on his Instagram story, “Beware!… I have nothing to do with it.”
