Sanchez Granted Permission to Represent the Philippines and Compete for Olympic Medals

Kayla Sanchez, photographed here working out in the pool at PhilSports last year, has finally received her long-awaited approval from World Aquatics. This news marks a significant milestone for the rebirth of Philippine swimming, with the two-time Olympic medalist now representing the national team in her swimsuit.

At just 22 years old, Sanchez has already shown her potential as a medal-winning machine based on her impressive performances. She is now set to prove her abilities in the upcoming 19th Asian Games (Asiad), where she is a strong contender for gold medals in three events: the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle.

Sanchez is determined to continuously improve and achieve great things for the Philippines. Her dedication and hard work were evident when she helped Team Canada secure a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay and a bronze in the 4x100m medley relay during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. She also won two silvers and two bronzes at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Born to Filipino parents who migrated to Canada when she was a child, Sanchez has the potential to break records in the Southeast Asian Games, starting with the 2025 edition in Thailand. She excels in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle, as well as the 50m and 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley events.

However, the most exciting prospect is seeing Sanchez on the podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics. With the approval from World Aquatics for her nationality change, she is now eligible to represent the Philippines in international competitions.

President Abraham Tolentino of the Philippine Olympic Committee expressed his gratitude for the approval and recognized Sanchez as a strong anchor for the national swimming team.

Sanchez will make her debut as a Filipino athlete at the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Following the advice of her coach, she has opted to skip the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

It has been nearly a century since a Filipino swimmer won a medal in the Olympics, but Sanchez has the potential to break that drought in Paris. Her journey is one to watch, as she aims to make history and bring glory to the Philippines in swimming.
