San Diego Padres Acquire Rich Hill, a Left-Handed Pitcher from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and First Baseman Ji Man Choi

Aug. 1 (UPI) — The San Diego Padres have made a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates to acquire left-handed pitcher Rich Hill and first baseman Ji Man Choi.

According to sources from MLB.com, ESPN, and The Athletic, this trade was finalized on Tuesday afternoon. In exchange, the Pirates will receive Jackson Wolf, Estuar Suarez, and Alfonso Rivas.

Rich Hill, 43, had a record of 7-10 with a 4.76 ERA in 22 starts this season with the Pirates. With 19 years of experience, Hill has appeared in 372 career games and holds a record of 89-69 with a 3.93 ERA.

In addition to his time with the Pirates, Hill has played for the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles, and Chicago Cubs.

He is set to become a free agent in the upcoming off-season.

Ji Man Choi, 32, had a batting average of .205 with six home runs and 11 RBIs in 23 games for the Pirates this season. Over his eight-year career, Choi owns a .238 average with 67 home runs. Prior to joining the Pirates, Choi has also played for the Rays, Yankees, Angels, and Milwaukee Brewers.

He is currently under contract through 2023.

Jackson Wolf, 24, made one start for the Padres this season, allowing six hits and three runs in five innings. In Class-AA, he had a record of 8-9 with a 4.08 ERA in 18 starts. Wolf was ranked as the No. 16 prospect in the Padres’ system.

Estuar Suarez, 17, played in 35 games for the Arizona Complex League Padres this season, batting .216 with four home runs and 23 RBIs.

Alfonso Rivas, 26, appeared in eight games for the Padres this season, hitting .200 with an RBI and two walks. In Class-AAA, he had a batting average of .332 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 58 games.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (47-58) will host the Detroit Tigers (47-59) at 7:05 p.m. EDT on Tuesday in Pittsburgh, while the San Diego Padres (52-55) will face the Colorado Rockies (42-64) at 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday in Denver.
