‘Sam Bankman-Fried imprisoned in ‘deplorable’ Brooklyn detention center’

Former FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who is facing fraud charges, will be held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn until his trial in October. The detention center has faced criticism for its appalling conditions, which have included issues such as maggot-infested food, dirty cells, and power outages. Notable inmates at the facility have included Ghislaine Maxwell and Guo Wengui. Bankman-Fried’s imprisonment stems from allegations that he leaked personal writings of his former lover, Caroline Ellison, to a reporter. Defense attorney Mark Cohen plans to appeal the judge’s decision, arguing that Bankman-Fried should be allowed to speak to the media. Despite concerns about the conditions at the jail, the judge denied the request to place Bankman-Fried in a minimum-security facility in Putnam County. Bankman-Fried was originally arrested in the Bahamas and held in a jail known for its harsh conditions before being transferred to US custody and released on a $250 million bond. He has pleaded not guilty to the fraud charges and his trial is scheduled for October 2nd.
