SAG-AFTRA Negotiations with AMPTP Fall Apart as WGA Approves New Agreement

Talks between SAG-AFTRA and Entertainment Companies Collapse

After failed discussions on October 11th, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) announced that negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have come to a standstill. The AMPTP stated that the divide between the parties is insurmountable, with no productive direction in sight.

SAG-AFTRA has expressed deep disappointment at the studio heads’ decision to walk away from the bargaining table without countering the union’s latest offer. This news comes after the union’s strike has already brought production and publicity to a halt for 90 days.

The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) recently ratified a deal with the AMPTP, ending their 148-day strike. The WGA was successful in securing wage raises, improved health and pension contributions, regulations for AI use in writing and training models, streaming data transparency, and more. SAG-AFTRA, which has similar demands, has not yet achieved the same outcome.

Quotable: SAG-AFTRA on Entertainment Companies’ Refusal to Compromise

“These companies are unwilling to protect performers from being replaced by AI, increase wages to match inflation, or share a small portion of the revenue generated by their work. We have made significant counters, including transforming our revenue share proposal, which would cost companies less than 57¢ per subscriber annually. However, they have rejected our proposals and failed to offer any alternatives.” – SAG-AFTRA statement, October 11th
