In a noteworthy development, city officials made an announcement on Friday regarding the successful Inside Safe encampment operation in Hollywood. This operation marked the 24th of its kind in the city, resulting in approximately 45 unhoused individuals being relocated to nearby motels.
An Inside Safe operation was coordinated by Mayor Karen Bass, L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, and Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez to address an encampment outside of Larchmont Charter School. Inside Safe is a citywide initiative aimed at bringing people living in tents and encampments indoors while also preventing the reestablishment of encampments.
In a statement, Mayor Bass expressed the city’s dedication to urgently address the homelessness crisis and affirmed the ongoing efforts of Inside Safe to connect unhoused individuals with housing and essential services.
Councilman Soto-Martinez highlighted the months of work carried out by his homelessness team to find housing for the individuals in the encampment. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between city leaders, service providers, and county partners to assist people in transitioning off the streets and towards permanent housing.
Supervisor Horvath, who leads the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority commission, emphasized the united efforts of local government agencies to ensure the wellbeing of unhoused individuals and connect them with vital life-saving services.
The impact of the Inside Safe initiative is significant, with over 1,400 Angelenos already being brought indoors, according to the mayor’s office.
Moving forward, Mayor Bass has taken decisive action by declaring a state of emergency. This involves expediting and reducing the cost of constructing affordable and temporary housing, as well as maximizing the utilization of city-owned properties for both temporary and permanent housing solutions.
On August 2nd, the L.A. City Council’s Housing Committee received an update from the chief administrative officer regarding the city’s spending on homelessness, along with statistics regarding Inside Safe.
As stated in the report, as of July 27th, Inside Safe has assisted 1,463 unhoused individuals, providing interim housing to over 1,105 of them. However, only a mere 8% (108 individuals) have successfully transitioned into permanent housing. The report acknowledges that data collection is an ongoing process, and efforts are being made by the city and LAHSA to improve its accuracy.
