Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ Scrappage Scheme Underperforms, Londoners Benefit More by Selling Older Cars and Gaining £3,200

Londoners who own cars that do not meet the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) standards set by Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, can make over £3,200 more by selling these vehicles online rather than using the mayor’s scrappage scheme, according to online car marketplace carwow. The company revealed that Londoners who sold non-compliant cars on its platform in July received an average of £5,200, which is more than double the £2,000 offered by the mayor’s scheme. This comes as the ULEZ boundaries are set to expand later this month and carwow has seen a surge in non-compliant cars listed by London motorists who are looking to replace their vehicles before the deadline. The scrappage scheme, which has cost the mayor £160m, has been extended to include all Londoners living within the 32 boroughs. However, carwow advises that selling the non-compliant cars on its platform or similar platforms can yield a higher price, as they are more attractive to buyers outside of London who are not affected by emissions charging zones. Car dealers outside of the ULEZ are aware of the value in these non-compliant vehicles and often bid on these cars in online auctions.
