Ryan Preece Discharged from Hospital after Frightening Daytona Crash

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Ryan Preece emerged from a harrowing crash on Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway that saw his car flip multiple times. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Preece’s car was running in 15th place when it turned sideways due to contact with Erik Jones. As the car transitioned from grass to pavement on the backstretch, it became airborne and flipped uncontrollably.

Although he managed to exit the car on his own, Ryan Preece, a driver for Stewart-Haas Racing, was transported to the infield medical center on a gurney for further evaluation. He was later taken to the hospital.

According to a statement from the team, Preece remained overnight at Halifax Health Medical Center for observation. He was awake, alert, and mobile, and was in contact with his family and friends. On Sunday morning, he was released from the hospital and is currently on his way home.

In a tweet late Saturday night, Preece expressed his resilience: “If you want to be a race car driver, you better be tough. …. I’m coming back.”

At 32 years old, Preece, who won the modified championship in 2013, has achieved three top-5 finishes in 141 starts. Prior to the regular-season finale on Saturday, he was ranked 24th in the standings and needed a win to qualify for the playoffs.

Race winner Chris Buescher expressed his concern for Preece: “I want to say I’m hoping the best for Preece. He’s a good friend of mine. I’ve gotten some updates as we’ve been in victory lane. It sounds like he is hanging tough, which makes sense — he’s a little hard-headed. I’m certainly hoping for the best.”
