‘Rustin’ Trailer Features Colman Domingo as Civil Rights Icon

Netflix celebrated the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington by unveiling the trailer for their upcoming biopic, “Rustin.” This film delves into the life of Bayard Rustin, a pioneer in the civil rights movement who organized the historic event. Set to be released on November 17th, “Rustin” portrays the story of Rustin (played by Colman Domingo) and his efforts to advocate for the rights of Black Americans through the 1963 march.

The film also features renowned actors such as Audra McDonald and Chris Rock, who play activists Ella Baker and Roy Wilkins, respectively. Rustin was a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr. (portrayed by Aml Ameen) and New York Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (played by Jeffrey Wright) as depicted in the movie. However, his contributions are often overlooked due to his association with more prominent figures.

Netflix’s official synopsis for “Rustin” highlights Rustin’s challenging and unapologetic nature, stating, “He challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down. He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten.” The trailer suggests that the film will authentically portray Rustin’s true self, with Domingo’s character declaring, “On the day that I was born Black, I was also born a homosexual.”

Rustin faced obstacles related to his sexuality early on in his life. Ten years prior to the March on Washington, he was arrested and sentenced to 60 days in jail for engaging in sexual activity with two men in a parked car in Los Angeles. This conviction remained on his record until his death at the age of 75 in 1987. However, in 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom posthumously pardoned Rustin. The film “Rustin” is executive produced by Higher Ground, the production company established by former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.

In an interview with Deadline, director George C. Wolfe echoed the sentiment shared by many, stating that Rustin has been “criminally unrecognized” by historians. He expressed hope that this film would rectify this oversight. Aml Ameen, who portrays Martin Luther King Jr., and Colman Domingo, playing Rustin, both consider “Rustin” to be a significant milestone in their careers. Domingo, who recently won an Emmy for his guest appearance on “Euphoria,” emphasized his responsibility as the lead actor to empower everyone involved in the production.

Ultimately, the goal is to shed light on the stories that need to be told and ensure that they receive the recognition they deserve. By unveiling the trailer for “Rustin,” Netflix aims to generate anticipation and interest in this important biopic.
