Rust Armorer Successfully Eliminates Drugs on the Day of Shooting

According to special prosecutors, the armorer on the set of “Rust” provided drugs to someone on the same day she accidentally discharged a live round from a prop gun, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The special prosecutors have now charged Hannah Gutierrez-Reed with evidence tampering, alleging that she transferred narcotics to someone else with the intention of obstructing her own apprehension, prosecution, or conviction. Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyer, Jason Bowles, claims that he has not yet seen any evidence to support this new allegation. Bowles finds it “shocking” and raises concerns about the investigation conducted by the state’s lead investigator.

In an email sent to prosecutors on Tuesday, Robert Shilling, a former chief of the New Mexico State Police who worked for the Santa Fe district attorney’s office, criticized the conduct of the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. Shilling described it as “reprehensible and unprofessional to a degree I still have no words for.” He also expressed doubt about his ability, or that of any other investigator, to rectify the issues in the case as outlined in the final police report from October 2022. The email, which was mistakenly sent to Bowles, has been made public and is cited by Bowles as supporting his motion to dismiss the charges against Gutierrez-Reed. Gutierrez-Reed intends to plead not guilty to both evidence tampering and involuntary manslaughter. Shilling, bound by a nondisclosure agreement, refused to provide further details about the email. He had been removed from the case and his email addressed that decision, leading Shilling to submit a notice to terminate his contract. Previous allegations suggested that Gutierrez-Reed may have been under the influence on the day of the shooting, as she was reportedly drinking and using marijuana during her off hours.
