On Sunday, Russian forces launched attacks on two villages in Ukraine’s Kherson region, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people, including a newborn baby, as confirmed by Ukrainian officials.

Furthermore, the Russian navy fired warning shots at a commercial vessel approaching a Ukrainian Black Sea port on the same day.

“The enemy continues to bombard the Kherson region,” stated Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The villages of Stanislav and Shyroka Balka, situated on the Dnipro river’s delta southwest of Kherson city, were specifically targeted.

Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Interior Affairs, reported that “a husband, his wife, and their 23-day-old daughter” were among the casualties. He later added that the couple’s 12-year-old son had also died.

Expressing his determination to stop the terrorists, Klymenko emphasized the need to take action by force, stating that they “will never stop killing civilians voluntarily”.

The general prosecutor’s office of Ukraine has launched an investigation into the shelling in the Kherson region, considering it a violation of laws and customs of war combined with intentional murder.

Since Russia initiated its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the impact on civilians has been devastating, with nearly 10,000 civilian casualties reported by Ukrainian officials, including 500 children. The attacks by the Russian military have also caused over 16,000 injuries and the destruction of 120,000 residential buildings.

In another incident on Sunday, a Russian warship fired warning shots and conducted an inspection of a commercial cargo vessel heading to Ukraine’s port of Izmail. The vessel was allowed to proceed after the inspection.

This incident follows Ukraine’s unilateral decision to reopen corridors for merchant vessels in an effort to break Russia’s naval blockade of its ports. Moscow has withdrawn from a UN-brokered agreement allowing passage of vessels carrying food and has threatened to treat commercial vessels heading to Ukraine as military targets.

In separate news, Ukrainian sources reported that new territory has been liberated from Russian forces in the southern parts of the country. The Ukrainian military often takes time to confirm such gains to the public. Reports suggest that Ukrainian forces are also close to freeing the village of Robotyne.

Analysts believe that Ukraine’s counteroffensive strategy in the south aims to disrupt Russia’s land bridge connecting it with Crimea, a peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.

Sergei Asksyonov, the leader installed by Russia in Crimea, reassured the public that the Crimean bridge was not damaged despite Ukrainian missile attacks. He urged people to trust only official sources of information.
