Russian Missile Strike Targets Hometown of Zelensky: A Shocking Escalation

A Russian missile strike on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown in Central Ukraine on Thursday night has resulted in one fatality and at least 54 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. This attack targeted Kryvyi Rih and caused severe damage to 10 buildings. Internal Affairs Minister Ihor Klymenko shared a video on Telegram that showed an apartment building engulfed in flames. The injured individuals, some of whom are in critical condition, include nine police officers.

In addition to the strike in Kryvyi Rih, three people were killed in another missile attack in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine overnight.

It is worth noting that Russia’s missile strike on Kryvyi Rih occurred while the country was holding elections in occupied Ukrainian territories. The United States has strongly criticized these elections, labeling them as a “sham.” Furthermore, there have been concerns about Russia backing pro-Kremlin candidates who often run unopposed. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who recently visited Ukraine and had a meeting with President Zelensky and other leaders, announced an additional $1 billion in aid for the country.

During Blinken’s visit, a separate Russian strike on a market in eastern Ukraine resulted in 16 deaths and 33 injuries.

These missile strikes come in the wake of reported progress by the Ukrainian military in the southeast of the country, possibly indicating a breakthrough in their long-awaited and slow-moving counteroffensive.
