The War in Ukraine Continues
American and NATO leaders believe that the war in Ukraine will not come to an end soon. Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria that it will take a “long time” to remove all of Russia’s 200,000 troops from Ukraine, which is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s main objective.
“That’s a very high bar,” Milley said. “It’s going to take a long time to do it.”
Zelensky’s Appeal for Assistance
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to visit Washington this week to seek additional assistance. According to reports from The Washington Post, Zelensky will make his case to members of Congress on Thursday, backed by the Biden administration, in an effort to secure Ukraine aid. This will be Zelensky’s second visit to the United States since the war began.
In an interview with CBS’s “Face The Nation,” Rep. Michael R. Turner (R-Ohio) expressed his belief that Zelensky’s visit will be effective in garnering support for Ukraine aid. “Zelensky is a great spokesperson. He really makes the case better than anyone that this is a fight for democracy,” Turner said.
While there may be differences in the aid package proposed by the administration and what Congress ultimately provides, Turner emphasized that the House, especially the Republican caucus, overwhelmingly supports aid for Ukraine.
Kim Jong Un’s Visit to Russia
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has concluded his visit to Russia. During his trip, Kim viewed aviation equipment and missile systems in Vladivostok, and attended a ballet performance and an aquarium visit, according to Russian media reports. The governor of the Primorsky region gifted him several items, including kamikaze drones and a bulletproof vest.
New Developments in Ukraine
Two merchant ships have traveled through a temporary shipping corridor in the Black Sea, heading to Ukrainian ports. This marks the first time civilian vessels have traveled through the corridor since a grain deal with Russia collapsed in July.
Jewish pilgrims gathered in Ukraine to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, with more than 35,000 attendees.
It has been announced that an apartment in occupied Crimea owned by Zelensky is among 100 properties that Russian authorities plan to sell.
NATO Secretary General’s Statement
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stated that there will be no quick end to the war in Ukraine. He mentioned that most wars last longer than expected when they first begin. Stoltenberg expressed his belief that Ukraine will eventually become a part of NATO. While everyone hopes for a quick peace, the situation remains complex.
