Russia Suggests Ongoing “Contacts” with U.S. Regarding Potential Prisoner Exchange

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, has confirmed that there have been discussions between Russia and the U.S. regarding a potential prisoner swap involving Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. The U.S. is seeking the release of Gershkovich and Paul Whelan, who are both believed to be wrongfully detained and have denied the espionage charges against them.

Peskov made these comments during a press briefing, stating that while there are ongoing contacts regarding the issue, they are being kept confidential. He emphasized the need for silence in order to maintain the progress of these discussions. Peskov’s remarks were in response to a query about the possibility of dialogue between Moscow and Washington on a prisoner exchange, following the recent visit by the U.S. ambassador to Gershkovich in prison.

Ambassador Lynne Tracy met with Gershkovich at Moscow’s infamous Lefortovo prison, marking the first visit since April after months of diplomatic access denial. The U.S. State Department confirmed that Gershkovich is in good health and remains resilient despite his circumstances. They further expressed their expectation for continued consular access and pledged ongoing support to Gershkovich and his family.

When asked about Peskov’s comments, the State Department referred to their previous statement regarding the reluctance of Russian authorities to engage in discussions about Gershkovich’s potential release until he is convicted. Gershkovich, who was arrested in March, has yet to have a trial date scheduled. The State Department’s special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, Roger Carstens, anticipates a prolonged trial process orchestrated by the Russians. Only after a conviction, it is expected that negotiations for Gershkovich’s release will take place.
