Rugby World Cup Chaos Alert in Marseille: England and Argentina Fans Face Crushing Crowds and Lengthy Queues at Stade Velodrome

BREAKING NEWS: Chaos Ensues for England and Argentina Rugby Fans at Stade Velodrome

Thousands of rugby fans from England and Argentina faced a chaotic situation as they encountered crushes and long queues while trying to get inside the Stade Velodrome in Marseille before kick-off at the Rugby World Cup. The delay in entering the stadium was witnessed by MailSport reporter Chris Foy, who reported a significant number of fans around one of the main entrances 40 minutes prior to the start time of 9pm local time.

The lengthy delays can be attributed to the slow security checks and fans arriving just in time for the match, causing swarms around the gates. Unfortunately, many supporters missed the start of the match, leaving the stadium only 50-60% full, as described by Foy as a “shambles.” An anonymous England fan even expressed fear for their life during the chaotic situation.

Social media platforms were flooded with images from frustrated fans who were stuck outside the stadium while the opening match between England and Argentina was about to begin. Videos shared by MailSport depicted the struggles faced by fans, as they resorted to vaulting over barriers or ducking under poles in an attempt to gain entry into the Stade Velodrome.

One enraged fan vented their frustration on a social media platform by describing the experience as “horrific,” directing blame towards World Rugby and England Rugby for their failure to provide timely updates amidst the chaos. Another fan criticized the organization of the event, mentioning the long queues and poor transport system. A third fan shared their disappointment with the delayed gate openings, resulting in a 40-minute entry process and thousands still queuing outside the stadium.

French authorities were previously subjected to criticism for their handling of entry to the 2022 Champions League final, where Liverpool fans in Paris faced similar issues. With the upcoming 2024 Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, the country will need to address their security and crowd management strategies to avoid such chaotic situations in the future.

Despite the chaos off the field, England displayed dominance on the pitch, securing a 27-10 victory over Argentina, even after losing Tom Curry to an early red card. George Ford’s exceptional performance, including six penalties and three drop goals, contributed to all of England’s points in Marseille. England’s next match will be against Japan in Nice on September 17, while Argentina will face Samoa in Saint-Etienne five days later.
