Rudy Giuliani Turns Himself In at Atlanta Jail on Charges Related to 2020 Election

Rudy Giuliani, the lawyer and close associate of Donald Trump, voluntarily surrendered himself at an Atlanta jail on Wednesday. He faces charges related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, where President Trump lost to Joe Biden.

Giuliani, along with Trump and 17 others, was indicted last week for their alleged involvement in a broad conspiracy to undermine the will of the voters. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis accused them of attempting to unlawfully appoint electoral college electors favorable to Trump.

Giuliani, 79, is specifically charged with making false statements and soliciting false testimony in an effort to create fraudulent paperwork. He is also accused of urging state lawmakers to violate their oath of office to appoint pro-Trump electors.

Notable individuals who surrendered alongside Giuliani on Wednesday include attorney Jenna Ellis, who allegedly played a role in convincing state lawmakers to unlawfully appoint presidential electors, and lawyer Sidney Powell, accused of making false statements about the Georgia election and organizing a breach of voting equipment in Coffee County.

Trump, who plans to turn himself in on Thursday, has reiterated his baseless claims of election fraud and described Giuliani’s arrest as an attack on election integrity.

Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark are attempting to have their cases heard in federal court, arguing that their actions were related to their work as federal officials. However, a judge rejected their requests to avoid being booked in jail while their motions are pending.

DA Willis has set a noon deadline on Friday for the indicted individuals to turn themselves in. Negotiations between the district attorney’s team and the defendants’ lawyers regarding bond amounts and conditions are ongoing.

The arrests of Misty Hampton, David Shafer, Cathy Latham, Ray Smith, and Kenneth Chesebro have also taken place in connection with the election subversion case. Shafer, in particular, shared his booking photo on social media.

Chesebro’s lawyers filed a demand for a speedy trial, but due to the complexity of the case and numerous defendants, it may take longer for the proceedings to begin. Meanwhile, some Republicans are calling for retribution against DA Willis, while a group of Black pastors and community activists voiced their support for her outside the state Capitol.
