In early January 2021, Trump pressured Raffensperger in a phone call to manipulate votes in Georgia, hoping to overturn Biden’s win in the state. Georgia played a crucial role in Biden’s overall victory in the Electoral College, which was confirmed by Congress.
Days prior to the joint session of Congress, which was disrupted by a mob of Trump supporters storming the U.S. Capitol, Raffensperger’s office issued a statement asserting Georgia’s commitment to election security, integrity, and access. Ted Goodman, a spokesperson for Giuliani, stated that the meeting between Giuliani and Smith’s prosecutors was voluntary and conducted in a professional manner.
