Rory McIlroy Takes a Sardonic Swipe at Phil Mickelson Over Ryder Cup Gambling Accusation

Rory McIlroy has consistently expressed his disapproval of Phil Mickelson’s decision to join the LIV Golf league last year. Despite the merger between the PGA and the Public Investment Fund, which supports LIV, and Mickelson’s move to the league, McIlroy continues to take shots at the six-time major winner. Recently, it was revealed that Mickelson has allegedly made over $1 billion in sports wagers over the past 30 years.

A new memoir about Mickelson claims that in 2012, he asked his associate to place a $400,000 bet on the U.S. team to win the Ryder Cup, which they ultimately lost in what is now referred to as the “Miracle at Medinah.” Mickelson, who participated in 12 Ryder Cups between 1995 and 2018, did not make the team in 2021 despite winning that year’s PGA Championship and becoming the oldest major winner at 51.

To add insult to injury, McIlroy suggested that Mickelson could at least bet on the Ryder Cup this year since he won’t be part of it. Mickelson, however, denied ever betting on the Ryder Cup, emphasizing that he would never compromise the integrity of the game.

According to the author of a forthcoming book on gambling, Mickelson’s estimated losses from gambling amount to around $100 million. Mickelson’s gambling habit was said to be extensive, with him making numerous bets on different sports, sometimes wagering large sums of money.

Despite all the controversy surrounding Mickelson’s gambling, he opened up about his past behavior, admitting that his gambling had reached a reckless and embarrassing point. He expressed that he’s been addressing the issue through therapy for several years and feels secure financially.

Meanwhile, McIlroy has been selected as a member of Team Europe for the upcoming Ryder Cup. This will be his seventh consecutive Ryder Cup appearance since 2010.

Overall, the ongoing feud between McIlroy and Mickelson continues to make headlines, adding an extra layer of drama to the world of professional golf.
