Roommate’s Attempted Murderer Receives Life Sentence

A convicted felon, aged 40, engaged in a confrontation with his roommate over money matters at their Hemet apartment. The situation escalated, resulting in the felon chasing down and shooting his roommate, causing severe injuries. As a consequence, the Banning jury found Dante Trimell Cooper guilty of attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and additional charges related to the use of a gun and inflicting significant bodily harm during the incident that took place in 2022.

During the sentencing hearing at the Banning Justice Center, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Rene Navarro took Cooper’s prior convictions into account when determining the appropriate sentence.

According to Lt. Nathan Miller of the Hemet Police Department, the incident occurred on March 2, 2022, around 4:30 p.m. at their shared residence on West Kimball Avenue near State Street. Cooper and his roommate, known as “J.M.” in court documents, got into a heated argument about cost-sharing. The argument turned physical, with the roommate striking Cooper in the face and head before attempting to flee.

Undeterred, Cooper pursued his roommate and proceeded to shoot him multiple times, as stated by Lt. Miller.

Within a few minutes, patrol officers arrived at the scene and discovered the wounded victim, who remained conscious. The victim identified Cooper, who was in close proximity, leading to the defendant’s easy apprehension without any resistance.

The victim underwent surgery at a regional trauma center and has since made a full recovery.

Cooper received medical treatment for his injuries and was subsequently transported to the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta. Court records reveal that he has multiple previous felony convictions in an undisclosed jurisdiction.
