Both Trump and DeSantis chose not to participate in key events at the fair. They skipped the Des Moines Register’s Political Soapbox and the “fair-side chat” with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. Trump expressed concern over Reynolds’ close relationship with DeSantis.
The Iowa State Fair has yet to produce any standout moments in the presidential race. However, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy surprised attendees by rapping to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” Former Vice President Mike Pence leaned into the discussion about January 6th but avoided saying anything that would upset Trump.
With Trump’s dominance and the lack of breakthrough moments, it seems increasingly likely that Trump will secure the GOP nomination in 2024.
