Rochester man sentenced to 30 days in jail for child sexual assault in 2021: Justice served

On December 4th, a 64-year-old man from Rochester was given a one-month jail sentence by an Olmsted County District judge for the sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl in 2021.

Paul Alan Collopy, the perpetrator, entered a guilty plea to felony second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a victim under 13 years old. In a plea deal reached in November, his sentence was limited to 30 days, with the possibility of serving it on work release.

In addition to his jail time, Collopy was handed a five-year probation by Judge Christa Daily. The judge also ordered a stay of imposition in his case, in compliance with Collopy’s plea agreement. Furthermore, Collopy was mandated to complete a sex offender program, register as a predatory offender, and prohibited from using the internet or having contact with children unless approved by a probation officer.

Upon his release from jail, Collopy will be subject to electronic home monitoring for 30 days. Currently, he is in custody at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center.

The charges against Collopy stem from the multiple instances of sexual assault committed against the 9-year-old victim, which began around April 2021. The abuse was reported to the Rochester Police Department in May 2022 by the victim and her mother, and the victim reported further instances of assault throughout May and June of 2022.
