Robert De Niro has released a heartfelt statement following the tragic passing of his grandson, 19-year-old Leandro De Niro Rodriguez.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of my beloved grandson Leo,” shared the Oscar-winning actor in a statement to People on Monday. “We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of condolences from everyone. We kindly request privacy during this difficult time of grieving our loss of Leo.”
Robert De Niro’s daughter, actress Drena De Niro, announced the tragic news in a heartfelt Instagram post on Sunday.
“I don’t know how to go on without you, but I will try to continue spreading the love and light that you brought into my life as your mother,” she wrote. “You were deeply loved and cherished, and I wish love alone could have saved you.”
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Leandro De Niro Rodriguez’s father, Carlos Mare, expressed in the comments that “words are not enough to express the joy he brought us or the sorrow we now feel together with our families and friends.”
Drena De Niro is the eldest of Robert De Niro’s seven children. He adopted her after marrying her mother, actress Diahnne Abbott. Robert De Niro also has a son, Raphael De Niro, with Abbott, from whom he divorced in 1988.
Leandro De Niro Rodriguez appeared alongside his mother in the 2018 film “A Star Is Born,” starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
